Press Release

First time in the industry – 100 % organic cotton lace

San Marcos, California- April 27 2006-

Eurolaces has become the first company to develop and manufacture 100% certified organic cotton laces for apparel and curtains. Until now, there were no alternatives to chemically grown, machine made, cotton or polyester lace trims.

Robert Seneker, CEO of Eurolaces, explained that the apparel industry, along with other textile industries have been waiting for a product such as this to enter the market.

“We have been researching a method of production to be able to supply organics to manufacturers for over a year. We have overcome every stumbling block to produce our lace with no chemicals, or toxins in the production from start to finish.  We believe the people want fewer chemicals in their bedding, clothing, and in their lives, we aim to help provide this, without compromising beauty or quality.”

Eurolaces have been successfully producing polyester laces in Slovenia, Europe for over 40 years, and welcomed the idea and challenge of producing organic cotton laces.  Slovenia is a small country located next to Italy and just under Austria, with some of the best organic farms today. They believe strongly in the efforts to save the environment, and use fewer pollutants in their production of textiles, crops, and more.

When Eurolaces was approached to begin production of the first available 100% certified organic cotton laces, they started from the ground up.  One whole room of their production facility was designated strictly for organic production and cleaned of any unnatural fibers or chemically produced materials.  This enables them to control the environment and assure that the laces would be free of chemical residues or toxins that may be present in polyester production.  They then perfected a way to produce the organic cotton laces with out tearing the thread, a problem for industry almost from day one.  The laces are sewn onto a cellulose backing, which later needs to be removed. In polyester production, this is chemically melted away; however, Eurolaces developed its own machine that uses nothing but hot water to melt away the backing.

Eurolaces is anticipating a strong response for their organic cotton lace, as consumers are requesting more and more organic products that fit within their mainstream lifestyles. These laces provide a mainstream look with the organic benefits people are searching for.

Ever wonder what it is so hard to find organic cotton machine made macramé lace?

We found out why. Our company has done extensive research into producing such laces. We believe in environmental protection and like to do our part in producing eco-friendly products.

Here is what we found, and how the whole process works. Traditional macramé lace is first produced on machines, using a special layer of fabric for the machines to sew the lace onto.

Once the lace is sewn properly, it is shipped from our family run factory in Slovenia to Germany, where it goes through a process to melt away the backing, leaving only the lace behind. Once this is done, it is sent back to Slovenia to be shipped out.

Here lies the problem, actually it is more than one problem that made organic cotton machine made lace almost impossible. First, the thread has to be strong enough to withstand the pressure of the machines. We have made revolutionary strides in obtaining such threads. Even 6 months ago it was nearly impossible to find, and now we finally have 100% certifed organic cotton thread that is able to withstand the production process.

OK, so where does the organic problem come into play?

Organic cotton thread is not allowed to be treated with any chemicals, and rightfully so; however, because the lace is boiled at high temperatures to remove the backing, it has to be treated or it will burn. You can think of it like a mattress, if it meats flammability standards, generally (not always) it is treated with chemicals so it will not burn.

Second, the process used to burn the backing off, is usually a chemical process used to preserve the threads. Even if we could find the thread strong enough and untreated, this process would still deem the laces as standard, and not organic, since would have some chemical residue on it.

However now we have perfected a new method creating the first organically made cotton lace. We are using a new cellulose backing that is completely natural, and melts away in nothing more than hot water. This allows us to melt the backing off using absolutely no chemicals. Our production is now 100% organic, from seed to finished product. We are very excited to provide this to the world for the first time ever in the industry, and hope you will find our laces to be a beautiful addition to your clothing, curtains, blankets, quilts, or other sewing projects.
